Starting A Bodybuilding Competition Diet |
A big part of preparing for a bodybuilding competition revolves around your diet. You may already observe a bodybuilding diet program but you will probably have to make some changes to your diet before a competition. This means really cutting out any junk food. You may indulge now and then at the moment but if you are serious about competing then you need to really watch what you eat.
Start Early
A bodybuilding competition diet needs to be started in well in advance of the actual competition. You should give yourself at least 6 to 12 weeks before the competition to work on your diet. If this is your first time competing then you might want to take a little longer to adjust to the diet.
The time you spend preparing your bodybuilding competition diet will also depend on your metabolism. The slower it is the more time you need; the opposite is true if you have a fast metabolism. You should be in tune with your body to know this.
Start Small
When you are starting a bodybuilding competition diet you want to cut out the bad foods slowly. You will need to start cutting down on sugars, sodium, and unhealthy oils. So look at what needs to be taken out of your diet and cut back or eliminate these foods. For example substitute a creamy salad dressing with vinaigrette.
Body Conscious
Part of a bodybuilding competition diet is monitoring the way your body reacts to different foods. You should be very conscious of how your body looks after eating something. For example if you experience bloating after eating something or do your muscles look smoother after eating something else.
Varying Food Options
As you get closer to your competition date you will have to be very strict with your bodybuilding competition diet. You will probably need 6 or 7 meals in the day. The portions will depend on your weight, the heavier you are the bigger the portions. You might want to talk to a trainer or nutritionist to figure out portion sizes. However when you are on a very strict diet it can be tempting to cheat.
This is because a restricted diet for an extended period of time can be very boring. To ensure that you stick to your diet make sure that you give yourself variety in the way you prepare food. Add spices and seasoning to make your food taste better without adding too many calories to your diet.
