Bodybuilding Exercise and Injury Prevention

muscle-man-outdoor.JPGBodybuilding exercise is an activity that many people are passionate about.  While it is not typically considered a dangerous activity, the intensity of bodybuilding exercise makes practitioners susceptible to injuries.  As a bodybuilder, it is important that you know how to train properly in order to prevent injuries and, if you are injured, how to train around the injury to assist in a fast recovery with minimal impact on your physique.

The most important rule to follow while performing bodybuilding exercise is to use proper form at all times.  Proper form will vary between exercises, but there are a couple of form tips that always hold true no matter what bodybuilding workouts you are doing.  These include keeping a tight core and a flat back.  Keeping a tight core is simply ensuring that your abdominals are contracted at all times throughout each repetition performed.  In doing this, you will generate greater gains from your bodybuilding exercise because, while your abs are contracted, you are working on developing your six-pack and you’re burning extra calories.  From a safety standpoint, keeping a tight core will also help prevent lower back injuries.  Keeping a flat back while performing bodybuilding exercises is also extremely important in preventing spinal injuries and it will help build up the lower back muscles resulting in an impressive “Christmas tree” effect while posing or flexing the lower back.

Aside from maintaining proper form, it is extremely important that you are completely focused on the bodybuilding exercise that you are performing as you are performing it.  All too often, bodybuilders are lifting weights while talking or while thinking about their next exercise or their problems at work or at home.  This is poor bodybuilding practice for two reasons.  First, you have to maintain a mind muscle connection in order to achieve maximum gains from your bodybuilding workout program.  Additionally, if your mind is not on the repetition being performed, then you’re not focused enough to recognize warning signs that you are heading towards injury.  Bodybuilding workouts require as much mental energy as they do physical energy.  If you stay focused, you will achieve greater benefits and fewer injuries.

So, despite your maintenance of proper form and strong mental focus, injuries may occur.  If you should sustain an injury, the first thing you should do is talk to a qualified medical professional about the limitations that the injury will place on your bodybuilding workout routine.  If a doctor gives the okay, you should continue training at a slower pace, using lighter weights or workout without weights at all.  You should avoid using the injured muscle group either as a target training group or as a stabilizer until you have received medical clearance.  However, you should continue bodybuilding exercises that focus on completely separate areas of the body.  This will enable you to recover from your injury without losing all of the muscle that you’ve been working so hard to build.

To get the most out of your bodybuilding exercise program, always use proper form and always maintain that mind muscle connection.  This will promote faster muscle building and it will reduce your risk of injury.  Bodybuilding is a demanding sport that requires discipline and dedication, both mentally and physically.  If you can combine the two, you will have a successful and healthy bodybuilding experience.
